Linux

We have more Linux options than you can shake a stick at, although there's a key thing to pay attention to while you're running the Linux version of this software:

Tauri is not very good on Linux, so the browser baked in is quite slow and also doesn't display images at all.

That may sound quite bad, and it is, so we have an alternative solution for Linux users: after booting the application, just... click on this thing to open a regular browser:

Firefox or Chrome are both good. The application will run on your computer and you can just connect to it with whatever browser works best.

This workaround also works in Windows and Mac modes, but Linux is the only one where it's actually necessary, I think.

Just Use the AppImage

  1. Download something that ends in _amd64.AppImage

  2. chmod +x "Horse Drawing Tycoon 2_"*.AppImage

  3. Double click that AppImage

Ubuntu/Debian + Red Hat Packages

You could use the .deb or .rpm packages, I guess? It's probably easier just to use the AppImage, these are built as a prelude to maybe doing some kind of package manager integration so one could apt install, a thing that doesn't work yet.

Server Operator

While Horse Drawing Tycoon 2 is meant to be run on your computer, forever, you might want to self-host it on an always-online public computer! Self-hosting offers many benefits, including:

  • You can use it remotely, from a "cellular telephone".1

  • It's honestly not a half-bad bit of blog software, and it's easier to run than Wordpress and at least a touch more efficient than Discourse.

  • Many people can use the same server at the same time, slowing it down for everyone!

  • If internet strangers create accounts, they can use those accounts to get you, personally, in trouble with the law for their terrible, terrible internet crimes! 2

  • It's expensive, and difficult!

  • You get to learn about "backups" and "docker" and "supervisors"!

If this appeals to you 3, more instructions are... pending.
